How to Search Engine Optimize a page

The following article is a guide to search engine optimizing(SEO) pages on your website. When carrying out this process it is important to remember the focus of these fields, that is the search engine results displayed in Google and other search engines.

There are four factors in the process for SEO

  1. The "SEO Page Title" - this is used as the title of the "Result" that is found by the search engine.
  2. Good content on the page - You can also help search engines index your content by using proper formatting in the content e.g. Heading tags for title's (e.g. Heading One, Heading Two) and paragraphs under these headings
  3. A good Page Description - this will be displayed under the Result title in Search engines and is generally what prompts a user to visit the page.
  4. Keywords - Keywords are becoming less important, use them as an indicator that a particular word is more important than it appears in the text.

How to add a "SEO Page Title" to a new or existing page

  • Go to the "pages" section of the Klixo Website Manager
  • Click edit on the page you wish to edit - or "New Page" if you are creating a new page
  • Once you are in the page settings, there is a field called "SEO Page Title" add your title to this field
    • The "SEO Page Title" should be around 60-70 characters in length - as this is the current amount of text Search Engines display as their result title, anything over 70 characters is generally replaced by an ellipses "..."
    • The "SEO Page Title" should be entirely relevant to the page and contain one or more of your "Keywords"
    • Write your "SEO Page Title" with the reader in mind so that it sums up the story/page and explains best that the information they want is on the page
    • Do not cram them with keywords to the point the title does not make sense.

How to set the Page Description

The Page Description is the made from the "Description" field in the Story Editor - this should be used to sum up the content of the page in a way that explains best that the information the user wants is on the page.

  • In the page settings, there is a field called "Meta Description" add your description to this field
  • Keep the Description around 140-160 characters in length
  • Write the description with the reader in mind.
  • If no data is present in the "Meta Description" field a default description will be used.

Keywords

  • Also in the page settings for the page you are creating or editing, there is a field called "Keywords" add your keywords to this field
    • The "Keywords" should be used as an indicator that a particular word is more important than others on the page, you can use both words and phrases.
    • The Keywords and phrases should all be in the main content of the story
    • Use keywords sparingly - we recommend no more than 7 keywords and phrases
