Whether on a Google, Yahoo or Microsoft website, 'Search' advertising works in a very similar way. When you search for something via a 'search engine' (eg www.google.co.nz) you will usually be served up both 'Organic' and 'Sponsored' search results.

'Organic' Search Results 
These are those listings which have earned their spot in the list of search results naturally (ie they are not paid for).
To improve a website's organic search results requires solid Search Engine Optimizing (SEO), and a significant amount of time - we generally allow three months for any major movement, however this does vary and can be an ongoing process.  SEO covers many aspects, in particular a combination of a well built website (fast loading, easy to use/navigate, built to WC3 Standards) and great content (regularly updated, relevant, helpful, keyword rich, descriptive headings and links) gives websites the best chance at achieving great results.

'Sponsored' Search Results 
Generally, Sponsored (or 'paid for') adverts and links will appear to the right and sometimes above the main set of results on Search Engine Results Pages (SERPS).

Sponsored search adverts are triggered by specific ‘keywords’ chosen by the advertiser.

For example, for our own online marketing search campaign we have selected keywords such as: online marketing company, advertising online, internet advertising, help with online marketing, etc.

When someone within our targeted audience - say those people who are based in our home town of Whakatane, New Zealand - types one of these keywords into a relevant search engine, our advert will be triggered. So Whakatane based people actively looking to find out more about online marketing would then see our ad - which might look something like:
